1. Observation · what does it say?
Question: How do the proposed offerings escalate, and what does verse 8 name instead?
Example answer: The questions move from burnt offerings to thousands of rams, torrents of oil, and even the firstborn. Verse 8 names doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God. The contrast is between increasingly extravagant offerings and the life God requires.
2. Meaning · how does the context explain it?
Question: What mistake is the answer correcting?
Example answer: Worship cannot be used to buy off God while ignoring how one lives. The three requirements join treatment of others with a humble relationship to God. They are not merely a slogan for being nice, and the passage does not suggest that offering a child is an acceptable act of devotion. The shocking escalation exposes the wrong approach.
3. Application · one possible response
One possible response: “When I discover an error that benefits me financially, I will report it and make the correction, while treating the person involved with kindness.” This gives justice and kindness concrete expression and recognises that faithfulness includes ordinary dealings.
Map relationships rather than decorate a verse
Try it yourself: What does verse 8 answer in verses 6–7?
Place verse 8 in the centre of a page. Add the preceding questions on one side and the three requirements on the other. Draw a line explaining the contrast. Add a context note from verses 1–5 and your application below; colour should identify a relationship you can explain.
A reading to avoid
Do not detach the three phrases from God’s prior faithfulness and the discussion of worship. Nor should this short passage be made to answer every question about salvation on its own.

God, teach me to act justly, love kindness, and walk humbly with You.
After trying your response, return to the passage: what did you learn, what did you do, and what still needs thought? You can revise your notes as your understanding grows.
